Properties and performance of polymer modified asphalt binders at high operating paving temperatures
The behavior and mechanical-physical properties of asphalt mixtures are determined not only by their characteristics (grading curve, binder content, additive content) and the type of aggregate, but also, and in particular, by the choice of binder and the presence of reclaimed asphalt (RA). This article aims to describe the properties of polymer modified bitumens (PMB) categorized as a PMB 25/55-60 that were supplied to the market in the Czech Republic in 2025 and 2026. Article aims to compare their properties with those of binders from the data collection, and subsequently to describe the effect of RA addition on the properties of the blended binder in the mixture (PMB and RA binder). It was found that the properties of PMB supplied to the Czech market in the last two years differed from the average characteristics determined during the data collection in the past. At the same time, it appears that even a 15% addition of RA can significantly affect the characteristics of the blended binder. The MSCR (Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery) test was used to describe the performance of the binders, evaluating their behavior at high operating paving temperatures (60 °C to 80 °C).
