Since 2006, in recognition of the contributions to the Czech Road Society, and the highly meritorious endeavors of Prof. Ing. Dr. Josef Špůrek, DrSc., the CSS has been annually conferring medals in honor of exceptional accomplishments in the field of road infrastructure.
Professor Špůrek primarily dedicated his efforts to the field of roads, including airports and urban roadways, significantly impacting the expansion of the highway network. Among his notable achievements was the establishment of a new field of study at Czech Technical University in Prague, road and urban transport engineering, inaugurated in 1964. He actively participated as a member of the PIARC Executive Committee and led Czechoslovak delegations at global congresses hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Mexico City, Vienna, and Tokyo. As the head of the then Czechoslovak Road Society, he also presided over the XIV World Road Congress of PIARC, held in Prague in 1971. This significant event welcomed over 2000 road experts. Following the Prague Congress, Professor Špůrek was granted lifelong membership in PIARC and was bestowed an honorary title in 1976.
